Project Hail Mary : A Book Review
My first impression…
Project Hail Mary has been on my radar for awhile, mostly because it is often mentioned as one of the best audiobooks. It’s been on my Audible library for awhile and since I heard that the movie is coming out, I finally decided to give it a listen. I instantly fell in love, not just with the story but also with the chemistry between the characters. Ray Porter did an amazing job and truly lived up to the hype. After finishing the audiobook, I immediately picked up a physical copy. At first, I tried immersive reading (listening the audio and reading at the same time) but later decided I wanted to experience the book from a different perspective.
What I expected from the book?
Knowing that Andy Weir is the author of The Marian, I expected a mix of hard science, realistic problem solving and a bit of a dry humor. Dr. Grace’s tone hooked me right away, both in narration and in writing. The mystery of his coma and back stories being revealed throughout the book made it engaging from start to finish.
What are the themes in the book?
Although the story centers on interstellar travel to save the sun and earth, the central theme of the book for me is love. Somehow, Dr. Grace and Rocky found each other and their love story is one of the most touching love stories I’ve read. The science was at times challenging and I had to reread few sections to grasp the theme, but the story remained compelling and entertaining. Weir has done a great job in balancing the technical concept with great pacing and storytelling.
How did the characters develop?
Ryland Grace’s character develops beautifully from start to finish. Weir established Dr. Grace as a highly intelligent and capable astronaut to save humanity but gradually revealing a human side shaped by fears. Rocky, on the other hand, has consistently shown optimism. Despite his sarcastic tone, Rocky embodied love in its purest form, making a great sacrifice that saved both planets. Their chemistry is one of the highlights of the book.
Any Weir’s writing style takes you on an emotional journey. The theme that stood out the most for me is love. The actions of Dr. Grace and Rocky show that love can be universal, quite literally!
My ratings…
Project Hail Mary exceeded my expectations. I loved the experience of creating a mental image of the planet Adrian and the Petrova line. I can’t wait to see it on screen! Most of all, I enjoyed the chemistry between the two characters. This is one of the best books I’ve read and I highly recommend it not just to sci-fi fans, but to anyone who wants to be transported to a new universe.
I give Project Hail Mary a 5 out of 5 stars rating!
